Is Product Management The Science Behind Entrepreneurship?

Recently, I have started attending Product Management (PM )session conducted by an old colleague. He asked me to read Agile Product Management With Scrum. I read the 1st four chapters. It has been an enlightening read PM in a SCRUM setup.

After 96 pages into the book, a question popped up, "Is PM the science behind Entrepreneurship?" I am not sure. But that is how I am visualising it. I realised that a Product Owner (the anchor of PM process) or a PM has to be the one person within whom CEO or promoter of the organization can see a part of themselves.

The roles and responsibilities are akin to an Entrepreneur. He/she must have these qualities:
  • Enthusiastic and energetic to play a long tiring game.
  • Ideate which needs to answer customer problems.
  • Capable of extracting management trust and managing budget.
  • Capable of giving birth to a product with all the nuts and bolts such as:
    • Envisioning the product by peeking into uncertain future and variables involved (customer, user, and market).
    • Drawing a Road Map with proper Release Plan to save the Vision from burning down.
    • Grooming a workable Product Backlog.
    • Sprinting with Sprint plan so that the SCRUM can deliver done within the stipulated release window.
  • Managing diversity in SCRUM team though authority and flexibility to guide for adaptation.
  • Align with the teams to release the product at the right release window.
  • Get feedback and iterate.
So, this gives me a feeling of unlocking the science of entrepreneurship when going through the book.

Is this how it is?
